It can form complexes with Eu(III), and has been studied by time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. 2-Hydroxy-2-Methylpromanoic acid is often used to synthesise nanocrystalline β-NiMoO4 at room temperature, or as a reagent to prepare fully functionalised tetronic acids, or bioisosteres of trimethadione, N-derivative-1,2,3-oxathiazolidine-4-one-2,2-dioxides from a-hydroxyamide
