Benzimidazoles are bicyclic, aromatic compounds constructed from a benzene fused with an imidazole ring.
Thanks to their structural similarities, benzimidazoles have been subject to investigation as isosteres for the indole moiety, particularly as serotonin receptor agonists. In addition to this, benzimidazole derivatives are prominent building blocks and scaffolds for a number of different pharmaceutically active compounds. A number are potent anthelmintics like Mebendazole and Albendazole, while others have been used as antihistamines. Other pharmaceutical properties of some benzimidazoles include HIV-1 inhibition and anti-tumour activity.
